Couples with a family history of Cri du chat, and planning pregnancy, may consider genetic counseling.It arises due to deletion of the short arm-end of chromosome number 5. The size of the deletion differs from one patient to another.As per studies, developmental delay and intellectual disability are more acute in larger deletions than in smaller ones. Also called cat’s cry or 5P- (5P minus) syndrome, it’s a deletion on the short arm of chromosome 5.It’s a rare condition, occurring in only about 1 in 20,000 to 1 in 50,000 newborns, according to the Genetics Home Reference.
